Getting Started

JavaServer Pages development is easy and fun. The following information is intended to help anyone interested in learning JavaServer Pages development get on the right track.

Java Development Kit

The first thing you need to get started is a Java Development Kit (JDK) version 1.1 or greater. You can get a JDK from Sun at http://java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.2/. You may also want to consider using the IBM JDK 1.1.8. It doesn't have all of the features available in the Java 2 environment since it is still Java 1.1 based, but the performance is exceptional. The IBM JDK is available at http://www.ibm.com/developer/java/jdk/download/.

Tomcat

You also need a JavaServer Pages (JSP) 1.1 web server. There are many JSP 1.1 Web Servers, the one we'll cover here is Tomcat from by the Apache Software Foundation. Tomcat is a world-class implementation of the Java Servlet 2.2 and JavaServer Pages 1.1 Specifications and also the reference implementation by which all others are measured. You can download Tomcat from the Apache Jakarta Project web site at http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/.
